They are shy of being seen, but do have a sense of the theater -- one glided right over our heads when our five-year-old granddaughter was visiting, and she still counts that as one of her best moments.

The horned lark has the best expression.

The wood duck shot is amazing.

If you tell me that's a Cooper's hawk, I'll ask if any of your ancestors lived in Salem. I am ...Hi Eric - Just reading this and fascinating. I am a commercial real estate broker and became very interested in the Hildreth story when we marketed and sold 42-48 Batterymarch Street -- one of Hildreth's buildings a couple of years ago. It had been over 100 years since their operation left...and the once grand 5-Story building lost the top 3 stories in a fire in the 1960's...When we marketed the building it was home to a deli on the first floor and a massage parlor on the 2nd floor....But I looked back to one of the older pictures of the building...and saw the name "H.L. Hildreth's" on the exterior and started researching. I learned a lot more with your article here....Thanks for looking so thoroughly into it. As a kid we had a summer home in Old Orchard (the 1960’s) and I remember being taken by my parents to watch the taffy pulling machine off of Main Street. We bought many boxes of salt water taffy and I often wondered about its history. So many of these things that you've talked about bring back memories of stories being told early in my life. My grandfather, H. L. Jr., died in the early 70's when I was a young teenager, but his wife, Doris Hildreth (my grandmother) lived into her eighties, and my mother just passed away this winter at the age of 93. My mom was honored at the 100th anniversary of the building of the pier at Old Orchard Beach. Lastly, I was told (and who knows if it was true), that the candy company was lost because of a sugar ration during WWII. Food (pun intended) for thought!Kathy Ann Shawnoreply@blogger.com
